Just pretend it's still Friday, OK? (8/11/07)

I was going to write this for Friday evening as a lovely, not-so-surprising treat to all those who haunt the boards. Alas, in much the same manner that many of us failed to receive an alumni S&D call this week, disappointment reared its ugly head. The blame lies, not with me, but with my mother, William Shakespeare, and my roommate. My mother for calling at 11:30 and proceeding to chat for the next 1.5 hours. William Shakespeare for writing a 3 hour play (who knew A Midsummer Night’s Dream was so long?). And my roommate just because, well, it’s probably her fault. Everything is, right?

Now to the review. Which will be long. Longer than usual, I mean. Possibly due to a certain phone call…

The Victory:

- Sting rays and waterfall hikes are probably OK and perfectly safe as excursions when one is on a cruise. Both still kind of freak me out.

- Priceline is a verb, much like Google and e-mail. If you’re way more organized than me and want to plan your Miami hotel already, you should Priceline. Or maybe http://www.biddingfortravel.com/, but I don’t think that’s a verb yet, so be careful.

- More discussion of Guitar Hero and related games was had. Does somebody want to buy me a video game system so I can find out why everyone gets so excited about this? That would be cool.

- Flight prices from the UK are fairly high but exhibit an impressive range.

- There were more cruise suggestions about what to bring. It’s also a good idea to bring/get contact info. Although I don’t know why they’re not just on the message board with the rest of us. This seems to imply that there is life outside of this place, an implication that I, for one, choose to ignore as much as possible.

- Most people have received their Paste by now, although often without the CD. Not much can be done about that, but if your copy came without the Sixthman newsletter, that can be seen at http://www.sixthman.net/.

- There were questions about when one should book a flight in order to get the best price. This is the eternal travel question. If someone figures it out, please let me know.

- Those nutty SoCal people have planned their gathering menu, even though they still have three weeks of planning remaining to them. Will they be able to keep up the planning momentum? Will there be discussion on a daily basis until Labor Day weekend? Probably. They’re weird that way.

- BNL (or a recorded facsimile thereof) tried to guilt some alumni into booking for the cruise. Such people should feel guilty.

- There was much advice on the perfect dinner time and whether one should stand or sit at the concert. Whatever your feeling on the matter, feel secure in the knowledge that we can all come together in our love for the chocolate melting cake.

- new_odyssey will be almost 31 on the cruise, while jengreg6 will be 26. And hopefully neither will mind that I just wrote that here.

- People are booking and planning flights to either Ft. Lauderdale or Miami. If the weather in New York keeps up like it did last week, it will be hard to find a flight from here.

- If anyone has any brilliant ideas about how to smuggle hamnack’s pregnant wife onto the cruise ship, please don’t hold back.

- On Wednesday, all of us lucky alumni were surprised and excited by the beautifully recorded voices of BNL thanking us profusely for our continued support. They even hinted showing this thanks with backrubs! Of course, some of us didn’t get this call. Even though we’re alumni. Who never did anything wrong, like flashing the band or having abnormally long legs. Life’s just not fair.

- jengreg6 and others are happy to be currently worth USD 0.95. If BNL calls the newbies, will that increase or decrease their value?

- If you’ve decided that you hate your roommates, you can try to win another cabin from Rock Ridge Music. Unless you’re in the UK. And Canada can be very cold in the winter.

- WeedMage, who is not Fin, answered the question about cameras at concerts. Although you can make your own BNL Euro sticker, I’m too lazy and would like the band to provide such things.

Enough real info for you? Hopefully not, since we still have the Caribbean Lounge and all of its real band info to go:

- There was more (HEART)ing of the band, especially from charmed one.

- In case you forgot, Steve is a good singer.

- Oakhurst is in PA (the state, not the polyester_angel) and CayCay got to see them. Although they’re on all the other Sixthman cruises, they’re apparently not official on ours yet. What’s up with that?

- The Joe Self auction ended this week. I won a flat! Now I just need to find somewhere to put it…

- Picking your top ten Guster songs might be as difficult as choosing your top ten BNL songs. But life is sometimes tough, so deal with it. And then post.

- If you’re looking to get into this Guster band, there are many recommendations about how to do so.

- cynthiadogmom recommended a few newgrass bands for the cruise. Although I’m not sure what newgrass is, they sound good…

Enough! No more real stuff! Which is good, because the surfeit of real, important news seems to have inspired an awful lot of the crap we normally spend time on in the Buffet:

- If you don’t want to know which threads you’ve read and which you haven’t, you can change your message board settings to help. Although why anybody wouldn’t want to read each and every thread (twice) is beyond me.

- John from Cincinnati ends its season on Sunday. I am absolutely certain that all mysteries will be resolved in one more hour. Especially since it only took an hour or two at the beginning of the season to establish said mysteries. The rest of the season was apparently just filler.

- If you ever felt the need to know some ridiculously long song titles, check out the count up and down game.

- Many TV shows, especially on cable, have shorter seasons these days. Lazy, moneygrubbing TV executives and my roommate are probably behind this.

- WeedMage’s new fish, Lukey (not Etienne) appears to live in an upside-down bowl.

- charmed one and NiceyDoodle liked Hairspray. I did too.

- 2kids5cats joined the increasingly less-rarified air surrounding those of us with more than 3000 posts.

- mommyand3 got one of those cool guitar string bracelets. This is why I need to find a guy – who else is going to buy me cool jewelry?

- Those moving portraits in the Harry Potter books are cool but confuse us. A full report on the future lives of every single character in the books is eagerly anticipated.

- If you need a lactose-free veggie dip, the board provideth.

- Can you really call them stupid quotes when one is from Einstein?

- It sucks when something as horrible as the Minnesota bridge collapse ends up showing how horrible people can be even without disasters.

- sarah11918 will be visiting the Spy Museum, the zoo, and the Air and Space Museum in DC. That sounds fun…

- Despite its reputation for cold (reinforced earlier in this Review), Canada is currently hot.

- A resume is a tricky thing that must be perfect, beautifully formatted, and full of correct, appropriate information before the prospective employer throws it in the garbage after a cursory glance.

- We may never know why a real green dress is cruel, although they certainly are on bridesmaids. And, braless hokey-pokey notwithstanding, Ellen is not a ho.

- What does it say about the Hoff that he’s at his best when engaging in self-mockery?

- If you want to spend your life as an immobile couch potato, you now have an environmental justification.

- I still didn’t get a phone call from BNL, no matter how many threads were devoted to it.

- 2kids thinks William Topley sounds like that guy from Crash Test Dummies. Chuck Norris is now creeping me out.

- If you don’t go on an excursion while we’re in port, you might be bored. Or pleasantly rested. But you won’t get to go at all if you haven’t paid Sixthman – they wanted more money this week.

- People got and thought about LCD TVs. Maybe someday, when I have money… And stop spending what little I have on cruises…

- Mission: Man Band has one of the best reality TV titles I’ve ever heard. Possibly even good enough to inspire me to watch one of these days.

- For those of us who were woefully neglected by BNL this week, some nice, techno-savvy folk provided an online version of the notorious phone call. Although it’s just not the same…

- Although you’d never know it from reading this message board, there are other bands in the universe. And many of us even like them!

- It would be cool to have one’s name included in a BNL song. Unfortunately, Amicus hasn’t gotten that cool honor.

- personal venus was informed by BNL that she hasn’t booked her cruise yet. She was worried by this. But at least she got a call!

- Of the 68 people who took the time to answer the poll, 82% were alumni. So why didn’t I meet more of you on the first cruise?

- PA will hopefully soon return to us, preferably before she murders her family.

- Is “gay dust” the same as “pixie dust?” If so, that puts a whole new spin on Peter Pan…

- Barry Bonds broke the home run record, much to the disgruntlement of the Guys on this board (and probably across most of North America). Several other athletes only broke their bones.

- Pot in pills is legal and probably not so much fun. Pot in church tends to be illegal. Even when the church’s founder is my first cousin, three times removed.

- Unlike all those athletes, jengreg6 did not break her finger.

- My Side of the Mountain is a great book, a true classic of children’s literature. And I totally don’t remember what happens…

- ABCs, the game that just won’t die. We should totally keep this going until the cruise. Hey – wouldn’t it be a good door decoration contest to base the design on one of the ABCs? Some of them would be very, very interesting…

- New Orleans is a neat city. The part of it that didn’t disappear into the Mississippi anyway…

- AirTran is advertising these really cool rock music themed cruises! We should check them out!

- Despite occasional forays into topicality, our inherent randomness has kept the random thread true to its nature.

- Water for Elephants sounds like it might be a good book. I’ll have to add it to the never-shrinking list of books I should get around to reading…

- I should join Facebook. Everyone else is doing it. And conformity is the oil on which our society continues to function smoothly.

- If you’d like to see Counting Crows and Hootie and the Blowfish in Allentown on August 28, you should contact bobz.

- Prednisone is truly a drug for everyone – asthmatic children, CayCay, cats, Shell, and just about everyone else! Just make sure you take it with food…

And that is that. I must now go back to my main week’s activity – lamenting my lack of BNL phone call. Adieu.
