Although I can (and will if necessary) blame NikkiPoooo (thus temporarily removing this burden from my roommate) for any potential lateness of this Week in Review, I thought I’d get an early start and possibly actually do something with it before the wild and crazy sightseeing of New York gets started today. And since there was much wild and crazy Gaelic Storming last night, today’s sightseeing is not exactly getting a quick start…
But I’m sure my time here is limited, so I will begin. And I will begin, as so often is the case, with the pleas of those who are seeking passing on our beloved vessel via the Seven Seas Lobby:
- Although it would seem that the only such seeker this week is cricket, who wants someone to come share what sounds like an extremely nice room. I wonder how much she’d charge for a refugee from steerage like myself…
And done! Maybe I will get through this in a reasonable amount of time. Or maybe not. But on to The Victory in the hopes that this might be so:
- A few people were still raving about the SoCal party, as if it were better than the WA state party or something…
- A thread that had lain dormant since November of last year was resurrected so that people could discuss their children’s attendance on the cruise. Or their lack of children’s attendance, as the case may be.
- You can all stop worrying – Oakhurst will be on the cruise.
- Sixthman had the oh-so-hard job of going on a cruise this week. Granted, they were actually working, but that’s beside the point. Thanks to their diligence and dedication to our needs, we now know that the windows don’t open and that the men’s bathrooms are adequate to the needs of dr.evil. Also, whether or not he’s a dreamboat, Tod has left Sixthman.
- Looks like there will be a party on the flight to Miami from Chicago!
- Many people, even those in Canada, got their wristbands. Most of those people have probably been much more dedicated to the cruise than me and have actually worn their wristbands instead of forgetting to put it on every single day…
- It is time to start freaking out about the cruise and harassing Sixthman constantly for info that we MUST HAVE NOW on a regular basis. Since there still isn’t a host hotel (although it’s arrival is promised very soon), that’s probably a good place to start. Or you can just stick with the dirty 80s pop song jokes and give poor Sixthman a break.
- Firefly was a good show. More people should have watched it. The show may have had absolutely nothing to do with ZiggyNJ’s post, but we’re running with the geek reference anyway.
- More people showed up to brag about getting phone calls, multiple phone calls mind you, from BNL. I still hate you all.
Now, although I’m still a little sore from the jigging mania that was Gaelic Storm last night, I will dance on over to the Caribbean Lounge to take care of that stuff:
- I posted pictures of BNL and Guster concerts, which did people absolutely no good if they weren’t willing to register themselves with a corporate entity that would probably inundate them with ads and other annoyances as a result. But I’m too lazy to post them in a free and open way, so that’s all you get. And my camera can still beat up polyester_angel’s camera.
- Guster’s going on a college tour. They tour a lot, don’t they? Cool…
- popinjay and DaWezl both suggested bands for the cruise. More bands! More bands!
- Not that we’re going to need them, what with the unconfirmed-by-Sixthman-but-confirmed-by-just-about-everybody-else inclusion of Carbon Leaf to our cruise! I am so never going to sleep on this boat…
- michelesobo thinks a major omission was made in people’s favorite Guster song lists. I might have included it, but I’m a lowly newbie fan who’d never heard of the song. Sorry!
- Gaelic Storm rocks. As do NikkiPoooo and CountAbby. But, oh, I am so tired now…
And will stagger over to the Grand Buffet, where a vast array of topic choices await my reading and typing pleasure. Of course, if it were slightly less vast, there might be a little more pleasure on my part at the moment, but you all never, ever listen… Anyway, to the recap:
- Lefties play guitars like righties. Unless they’re righties like me who never quite get around to learning the guitar that’s been sitting in the corner for the past year…
- PA dared to express a lack of hatred for a Nickelback video and was virtually pummeled, although said pummeling was somewhat mitigated by the gracious presence of Wayne Gretzky (not so much by Nelly Furtado).
- The free Canadian music was downloadable from a plethora of sources, if you are as tech-savvy as exportedmolson.
- annaonthemoon would like a message board, pre-cruise gathering in Philly. Since I could probably go to such a gathering, I support this idea 100%.
- personal venus loves her cats. Possibly too much…
- People have extravagantly purchased electronics, cars, intriguing-sounding creams, and guitars. This makes me feel a little better about spending my money.
- Exercise is an excellent way to lose weight or at least look better and be leaner. I should really try some of that.
- The Emmys look like they were fun. Especially for those lucky people, Musical Genius and personal venus, who got to go eat the pretty food (or just look at it, in PV’s case). Formal night on the cruise may not be quite so much fun as a major awards ceremony, but dressing up is always entertaining.

- I had a pretty crappy slice of pizza last night. If I could remember where that pizza place was (somewhere in Greenwich Village, possibly very close to the Gaelic Storm concert…), I would totally sue them.

- Cake is yummy. Which has something or other to do with a band called Pavement, but I’m feeling a little distracted by the dessert right now.

Live from New York, it’s Saturday mid-afternoon! (9/8/07)
I was supposed to do this yesterday, right? Instead I went to see Guster. Sorry about the priorities, but I figured you guys would understand, if anybody did. The rest of the world’s understanding might actually be an issue this time, since I kinda sorta missed a few school things to go. Oh well. They probably didn’t miss me. I hope…
In the hopes that many, many more will be able to enjoy the cruise, I shall begin with the Seven Seas Lobby (does the name of this forum relate to the idea that you enter through a lobby and likewise enter this cruise by finding a roommate? has this idea occurred to others a long, long time before now?):
- fan2bnl is looking for someone to fill her double room and lispiswiswoo is looking for a bed somewhere so that she may partake of the joy that is the cruise as well.
But no one else seems to be looking for roomies at the moment, so I’m done with that and will instead continue on to The Victory, in order to get the important stuff out of the way:
- All those Sixthman people are about to go on a cruise in order to make sure ours is good. I think I need to get a job in which I’m paid to go on vacation in order to plan other vacations. I could really get into a job like that.
- Hamilton is closer to Toronto than to Buffalo, right? If the weather sucks, closer airports are a plus, but flights from Canada to Florida are ridiculously overpriced, in my opinion.
- umbravirago, who might prefer to be known as Amber and Greg have joined the booked-a-cabin-really-close-to-mine club.
- Both WA state and SoCal had gatherings last Saturday. Although WA state was undoubtedly better, there are pictures of the SoCal gathering, should you desire to increase your jealousy about such events. Or you should just have your own. They’re fun!
- Cab rides between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami can be expensive. Cab rides in New York are always expensive. For that money you get a funky smelling vehicle, a crazy driver speaking any language other than English into a cell phone, and multiple near death experiences while the fare box clicks ever higher. And yet some people think this would be fun for thousands of miles…
- There seem to be some cheap(-er, it’s still very expensive) flights to Florida from the UK.
- Some of our board members are incredibly ambitious and physically fit people who are considering running the Miami Half Marathon before they get on the ship. If Musical Genius really does run while pulling his luggage behind him, we should definitely all watch.
- I booked my flight to Florida, completely breaking with my normal pattern of waiting until the month before to buy a plane ticket. Other people also booked their tickets. I don’t know if this breaks any of their patterns or not.
- Even if I have booked a flight, I haven’t done anything about a hotel yet. I think I may be holding out for a host hotel. Or for polyester_angel to do it for me. I mean, isn’t booking the ship cabin enough for one member of a room? The hotel room should totally be someone else’s job. Preferably someone less inclined to leave it to the last minute. But I digress. Several people may be staying at the Candlewood Suites and will be looking to share transport. But the really important information from this thread is that Garyrulez will be staying at the Conrad (which can be booked using Hilton points). Please plan your stalking accordingly.
- People have started to get their message board wristbands. If you haven’t, you should definitely be jealous, because they are extremely cool. Thanks 2kids!!!
Fortunately for my day’s activities and poor, aching fingers, I’m not expecting the Caribbean Lounge to take too long. Although I could be wrong about that:
- robbks saw Gaelic Storm in Kansas City. I’m going to see them in New York on Thursday!
- Los Straightjackets sound cool, but do you have to speak Spanish in order to enjoy them? That could be a problem for me…
- I saw BNL on Saturday (last week, not today). I saw Guster yesterday. Feel free to be jealous.
- Harland Williams was on Last Comic Standing this week. Which has just made me realize that I haven’t watched TV all week. How pseudo-intellectual of me!
And that’s it. See? Short. I wish I could say the same for the Grand Buffet. But I can’t. As usual:
- This isn’t about any particular topic, but did anyone else notice how amused safinch seemed to be this week? He seemed to be laughing in virtually every thread. This may be either a testimony to the wittiness of several posters or a sign that safinch is an easy audience.
- NikkiPoooo successfully entertained her inconsiderate relatives. Therein may lie the true definition of talent.
- Facebook keeps track of musical tastes by region. Facebook is everywhere – people ask me about being on it constantly, even though I’ve never even looked at Facebook. Should I be scared?
- 2kids’ mouse doesn’t work for her but is fine when others are involved. I have this problem with computers too. I figure it’s kind of like opening a tight jar. No matter how hard you try to open it, the lid just won’t budge. And then you hand it to someone else, who opens it with no effort in seconds. Just the universe out to get us (well, me, and apparently 2kids, anyway) yet again. Sigh…
- Someone stole PA’s band-aids this week! Also, she started university. Although I don’t think I’d be able to concentrate on something like school when lacking My Little Pony band-aids.
- In case you have forgotten since you read about it in The Victory recap, the WA state party was fun. And inspired jealousy in the state of Wisconsin. And in PA, who should totally visit New York for a gathering that would be planned in her honor (any excuse to party… ).
- The networks’ fall seasons will be starting in the next few weeks. Yay! Mindless TV to get me through the year! Many people are excited to see their favorite shows, even if those shows are Degrassi (interesting choice Shell…). Not coming to TV soon, but enjoyed by several were the movie Stardust and the show Dead Like Me. Both of which I approve of.
- I still don’t like beans on toast. But at least there is much humor to be found (or possibly diligently searched for by the crazies around here) in such a topic.
- The Weight Loss Encouragement thread has resurfaced. For me anyway, this is a very, very good thing.
- According to Myspace, we’re all sex-crazed lushes. But in a good way.
- Flying sucks but can be helped by goat sacrifice. And pee is apparently good for just about anything.
- The questions of children should be encouraged, as they promote creativity and sorely-needed curiosity about the world. However, if these questions prompt the children’s parents to scream and/or wring their necks, their benefits might be slightly reduced.
- Puppies! Puppies! Puppies!
- Buffalo wings, like many other bizarre New York state foods, are yummy. And now I know that the mini-drumstick things are called drumettes! Still don’t know what part of the chicken they are though…
- The Stupid Elation was on TV this week (could this be an explanation for my lack of viewership?). Topless decks are not always a good thing. But flashing the band can sometimes be related to the great mysteries of reincarnation. And paste-eating.
- Rankin PMed 2kids.
- Even if Yorkie bars are not for girls, all other chocolate is sissy and effectively emasculates any man with whom it comes into contact. If this means that women get all the chocolate, this works for me. I want some chocolate now. Mmmmmm…
- Elavil has many interesting pharmaceutical properties which mostly just end up freaking me out. Drugs tend to do that to me.
- Other people get an interesting variety of songs when they shuffle their MP3 players. I usually just get a lot of BNL, but I only have about 200 songs total on mine, so that’s not a huge surprise.
- I expect to soon have a nightmare involving star-nosed moles. Nature kind of freaks me out sometimes.
- Having apparently gotten bored of discussing sports, the Guys moved on to their other topic of conversation. Or is conversation too strong a word for what was posted in the Guy Talk thread this week?
- If dogs did vote, I wonder how this would affect our government. Is it incredibly cynical of me to think that it might be improved?
- The parents of Madeleine McCann are now suspects in her disappearance. This whole story is depressing and scary.

- Electric fences sometimes work, although some pets are determined/dumb enough to defeat them. They also don’t keep bigger animals from eating your animal. - Although some purchases are more extravagant than others, the sad fact of the matter is that all purchases become extravagant when one is broke…

More 2kids5cats than you can shake a stick at! (9/1/07)

Another week. And who would have thought that so much could change in only 7 days(OK, 8, but we’re pretending that I did this yesterday)? Where once I was the highest poster, I am now but third, thanks to posting frenzies perpetuated by WildEagle and personal venus. It is indeed a different week. Unfortunately for me, this different week wasn’t so different in terms of how much you crazy people posted. So, without further ado…
The Seven Seas Lobby:
- Where unfolding has filled her cabin in what must be record time (3 days!).
- And Katiesue04 needs to fill the void left by one cabinmate who will unfortunately not be joining us in January.
But since most of you reading this already have accommodations at sea (or are planning to stow away in the equipment or something), we now move on to the Caribbean Lounge (I know it’s usually The Victory next, but it’s my week in review and I can randomly change the order anytime I want to. So there. I’ll probably go really crazy and recap the Buffet first next week. So watch out…):
- If you have an idea of what to call the supergroup consisting of ¾ of Guster and a couple of BNL percussion types, your contribution is welcome. Although I must retain my Stupid Elation allegiance as long as possible.
- The outpouring of shock and dismay at the future Thundergod non-presence was somewhat mitigated, at least for Garyrulez, by possible hints that Sixthman bases their communications on the postings of that amazing gentleman. For a full listing of all Garyisms, please read every topic ever posted on this board over the past year and a half.
- Although there are indications that they will be on the cruise, the idea of Oakhurst not being on the cruise inspired some rare anti-Oakhurst sentiment among a few members of this board.
- The Friendly Indians perform the Psych theme song. That’s really all I got from their Myspace page.
Not so much from that forum this week. Thank goodness – I have to leave for a message board gathering in just a little less than two hours and do not have time for such nonsense. Fortunately, it is now time to recap The Victory, where nonsense does not dare to tread:
- Marathons involve people running. Some people used to run. Some people run now. I fit into neither group. The running people of a marathon tend to make driving and hotel booking difficult. Which means we may all be staying out by the airport, at least if we follow Sixthman.
- 2kids5cats is bringing wristbands to the WA state gathering, which means we will all get ours before the rest of you. I told you that you should all come to this gathering!
- Excursions that don’t happen are refunded. This is probably good business sense.
- Martha has booked a cabin that is likely only a few doors down from mine. Yay Riviera Deck!
- It’s a little bit scary that flying to Florida from Boise can be as cheap as flying from New York. And there are many options for people, like those from Boise, who fly into Ft. Lauderdale instead of Miami. So many, in fact, that I’m going to make you actually read the thread, should you care to know what they are.
- If you come to the WA state gathering, starting in about 2 hours or so, you will get the chance to meet me. And other people. Who are probably cooler than me anyway.
- Flights where you have to change planes can cost more than direct flights. Fun how the universe often chooses not to make sense, isn’t it?
Booking hotels online is easy but a little confusing. The last time I did so, they totally charged me in advance for the room, so be careful when you do so…
- Carnival apparently has a big screen thing so that people on the Lido Deck and on the shore can watch Spiderman or Godzilla or Titanic or whatever. This may or may not be a good idea for our cruise, but I got lost amidst the reasons and am not sure.
- 2kids doesn’t know CayCay’s and Rankin’s addresses. The scary thing is that she knows all of the rest of ours…
- If you are a cool person who bought a wristband, you should be getting it soon. But not as soon as me!
- People who are not me spent the week working hard at finding cheap, good flights to Florida. People who are me did not.
- SoCal’s having a party today too, if you must miss the WA state one.
- Our illustrious Lauren is out of town for something like forever. Or maybe it just feels that way due to the vast emptiness left in our lives by her departure…
But wallowing in loss-of-Lauren grief never did anyone any good, so I’ll try to quickly (ha!) summarize the week that was in the Buffet:
- nvcatgut is still looking for people in Northern California. I’m sure there are some, somewhere.
- 2kids lost her Guster DVD. If you have it, you should probably give it back.
- Someone among 2kids’ top friends has a crush on her. In an amazing coincidence, it would appear that someone among my top friends has a crush on me too! Amazing how that works!
- bhogan’s town got hit by tornadoes. Fortunately, bhogan did not.
- We’re buying an island.
- I finally saw Stardust this week. Which makes me slower than many of you.
- There will be a new Guitar Hero soon. There will also be a game called Rock Band. Games like these are the rare ones that make me wish I played video games.
- WildEagle failed to rouse the Guys to chattiness about some sort of game between Canada and Russia.
- Vera Wang clothes seem like far more trouble to Kohl’s than they could possibly be worth. And now we all know what kind of sheets NikkiPoooo uses.
- Hedgehogs kind of look like hairbrushes.
- Sixthman asked us to vote for Carnival for some awards. Apparently it’s easy to do so. Apparently I am still too lazy…
- There’s a big fire in Idaho. Fires are scary.
- We did a pretty good job identifying band names from a picture. Although ShortAlaina seems to have done better on her own than the rest of us did collectively…
- If you’re worried about gaining enough weight before the cruise, we now have a thread to support your endeavors.
- Owen Wilson may have tried to kill himself. That totally sucks.
- Big Love and Dexter are both amazingly good shows that I want more of. And will not be getting any time soon…
- Naming movies from a picture was harder for me than naming bands. This does not make any sense.
- A guy in France strapped roughly a million wheels on a suit and proceeded to roll around Paris. Why is it that I can never come up with anything as cool as that???
- Bad translations of Chinese into English are available on ebay. Is there anything that site doesn’t have?
- Some of you still have record players. I don’t, although now I totally want that gizmo that transfers music to CDs.
- As he so often does, WildEagle provided us with still more stupid quotes.
- There were mixed reviews on Californication, which makes me feel a little better about not having Showtime.
- The scariest part of all of our first reactions to words was how similar many of our responses were. Possibly indicating that we all spend too much time chatting on this board…
- Hurricane Katrina was two years ago this week. People down there (or wherever they are these days) are still justifiably pissed off at the government and its leader.
- Mad Men and Burn Notice are two of the best things I’ve seen on TV in the past few years and should be watched by everybody. There are several other shows on cable this summer which may be good. I, however, haven’t watched them, so no opinions will be given here. But you should definitely watch Mad Men and Burn Notice.
- aggcards likes Wil Seabrook’s album, and NikkiPoooo has interesting associations with Dakota Moon.
- Some married people share e-mail addresses, credit cards, and bank accounts. Some do not. Some share some and not others. I guess whatever works for you…
- Garyrulez really likes the video of a woman getting hit in the face. It is strangely compelling…
- While it was amusing, I’m guessing you have to actually be a gamer to really get gamer humor.

- 2kids met an old acquaintance that she used to have an attraction to. Some people who are not 2kids act inappropriately in such situations. I know these things make great movies, but I doubt they ever would work in any interesting way in real life.

- Inconsiderate family members suck. Especially since you can’t ever really get rid of them.

Alas! No clever title this week. (8/24/07)
Another week. Another 50,000,000 or so posts. I’m getting a little nervous about what this board’s going to be like when we get close to the cruise and have pressing things to post about.
For now, however, I try to keep up with the insanity. This is much more difficult at my parents’ house, where I am expected to share a computer and to actually spend time with said parents and other family members. Fortunately for all of you, I’m tired of them at the moment and have opted to be one of those anti-social internet types.
As I am a little bored with my standard order of recapping, I will begin with the Indian Library:
- The person on S&DI who won the Scrabble tournament received lunch with the band and possibly an autographed board. If only I were good at Scrabble…
- Nudity is apparently not as shocking as many expected, and AZSally saw a lot of Tyler’s butt.
And now I turn briefly to the Seven Seas Lobby:
- americk is still looking for a third roommate, and Jonesy is looking for anyone to share. I wonder if they have found each other…
Before heading over to The Victory:
- There is going to be the greatest pre-cruise gathering in the history of the universe on Sept. 1, chez Barenakedesq in Washington State. Even if you don’t live anywhere nearby, you should consider attending. You will undoubtedly regret it if you do not.
- Although I never saw them on the cruise, apparently Oakhurst tends to surround unsuspecting music fans in enclosed places before serenading them. That’s kind of cool.
- The grief continues among those who did not receive a phone call from BNL. Sixthman may have to schedule daily support group meetings on the Lido Deck. Until then, we’ll all just have to make do with the virtual donuts and shared stories of woe.
- 2kids5cats has the wristbands! And they look good! And she may be sending them soon! Yay! Stuff in the mail!
- The amounts spent by cruisers on the ship varied widely. For the upcoming cruise, when calculating the amount you intend to spend, please factor in the number of $6-$10 drinks you are planning to buy for me. That should help to avoid any confusion.
- There will be more people at the SoCal party on Sept. 1 than at the WA state party. But remember, it’s quality that matters, not quantity.
- The many S&D virgins that plan to attend the upcoming cruise should not be deterred from their anticipation by the many MILFs that wish to haze them.
- Those of you who are organized will be happy to know that JetBlue now has a schedule for January and February. Those of you who are like me still haven’t decided which airport to fly from (though in my defense, I appear to have 4-5 to choose from at the moment).
- Despite the fears of weather forecasters, residents (who understandably didn’t want to lose everything/drown), and anticipation-happy cruisers, the destruction expected to result from Hurricane Dean was not as bad as suspected. So our cruise will not be ruined! Yay! Also, the livelihoods and lives of millions of people are OK too.
- Possibly in response to the level of complaining reached by certain members of this board, Lauren very kindly posted audio files of the various phone calls. Thank you for that, Lauren. But I’m still going to moan and whine.
- Host hotel info is on its way! Which will be great, because then I can book a room and feel like I am organized at least in this small, small way.
- There is some concern that canopy/zip line excursions won’t be as good after the recent hurricane damages. Just as long as it doesn’t affect the dolphin swimming…
- It would appear that the Miami marathon is happening right around the time we all will be getting on the ship. Some people are considering trying to join them. Others are concerned that they may fill up a lot of hotel rooms, making the night before a little more difficult for us. I just plan to toast them from the Lido Deck with one of those pretty tropical cocktails.
Now for the Caribbean Lounge:
- Gaelic Storm in the rain in Milwaukee sounds like way more fun than most other bands in the rain.
- ck122300 has seen an awful lot of bands in concert.
- Thanks to my sister, who was at the London BNL show, I now know what was going on in the picture currently being used by J9x as an avatar. And yes, it was amusing.
- Flight of the Conchords has reappeared as a suggestion for a new band on the cruise. That would make me happy. The mention of someone named Cas Haley, who was apparently on one of those reality show things I try to ignore, incited some debate.
- Guster is playing in Providence on 9/7 and Boston on 9/8. These shows are cheap. Cheap is good. Especially for those of us likely to spend 5 times as much as the ticket price just on getting to the concert…
- The “Barenaked Ladies Are Them” video is amusing. As are the other 67 videos provided by bnlmusic on YouTube. I waste a lot of time on YouTube.
- Although Guster apparently pretends that the album “Parachutes” doesn’t exist (**why is that?), there are a lot of good songs on it anyway.
- Buck 65 and the LeeVees were suggested for the cruise. I’m guessing we have a better chance of getting the LeeVees…
- If you are influenced by the music choices of others, check out the many Top Ten Guster songs to decide what you like.
- Many people like Cake. I like Cake too, especially if it’s chocolate.
- We are saddened to note that we will not be graced by the Thundergod on the cruise, although the sadness is lessened somewhat by the excellent use of “thunder-” in multiple posts. And by the pinch-drumming of Tyler and Andy as well, of course.
And finally, last as always but never, ever least, the Grand Buffet:
- Some people prefer a subscription music download service, while others like to buy songs from a service like Itunes. I do both…
- WildEagle and WeedMage liked Stardust. I plan to like it too, if my family ever decides to actually go to a movie instead of just talking about it.
- 2kids5cats received a great deal of advice on music that should be loaded to this mysterious “Zune” thing that she got last week.
- If the message board does not sufficiently entertain you, you might like to try crocheting a Darth Vader beer hat. Or watching falling sand. Or noticing Michelle in WI’s over 2000 posts. Or sticking bacon to a cat. Or destroying your browser window via shaking or nuclear attack. The possibilities are endless…
- Short Round is old.
- We continued to complain about how hot/cold it was this week.
- Sister Hazel is not cool enough to be on a boat with Barenaked Ladies. Then how do you explain how all of us are cool enough?
- Someone needs to come up with a demotivational saying that starts with a Z or the alphabet game will be no more!
- Some drugs have interesting names and may make you hungry. I don’t need drugs to make me hungry. I am, in fact, hungry right now and very sad that I will not be eating dinner for at least half an hour.
- Many people on this board live in Wisconsin and were talking about it again this week. Also, the singer of “Wilted Rose” does indeed sound like someone from BNL.
- The boys that snapped my bra back in middle school didn’t even get in trouble with the teacher. And now I find out that they could be sent to jail for such an offense! Oh how I was ignorant back then…
- Downloading from Nettwerk is always an adventure. One that probably ends better if you follow up your problem with more than just one e-mail…
- It’s probably a good thing that many people on this board don’t have a million dollars.
- It is extremely annoying, and possibly illegal, to be forced to volunteer on your day off at the request of your employer.
- Michelle in WI is Michelle in the Maritimes this week. That’s a place where people make out with fish!
- Although many songs might qualify for a place on a list of Worst Songs of All Time, I’m sticking to filling that list with the Rod Stewart collection. Ugh.

- Sixthman and a whole bunch of message board people celebrated Shell’s birthday. My birthday’s in December, in case anybody wants to start planning in advance.

For now, however, I try to keep up with the insanity. This is much more difficult at my parents’ house, where I am expected to share a computer and to actually spend time with said parents and other family members. Fortunately for all of you, I’m tired of them at the moment and have opted to be one of those anti-social internet types.
As I am a little bored with my standard order of recapping, I will begin with the Indian Library:
- The person on S&DI who won the Scrabble tournament received lunch with the band and possibly an autographed board. If only I were good at Scrabble…
- Nudity is apparently not as shocking as many expected, and AZSally saw a lot of Tyler’s butt.

- americk is still looking for a third roommate, and Jonesy is looking for anyone to share. I wonder if they have found each other…
Before heading over to The Victory:
- There is going to be the greatest pre-cruise gathering in the history of the universe on Sept. 1, chez Barenakedesq in Washington State. Even if you don’t live anywhere nearby, you should consider attending. You will undoubtedly regret it if you do not.
- Although I never saw them on the cruise, apparently Oakhurst tends to surround unsuspecting music fans in enclosed places before serenading them. That’s kind of cool.
- The grief continues among those who did not receive a phone call from BNL. Sixthman may have to schedule daily support group meetings on the Lido Deck. Until then, we’ll all just have to make do with the virtual donuts and shared stories of woe.
- 2kids5cats has the wristbands! And they look good! And she may be sending them soon! Yay! Stuff in the mail!
- The amounts spent by cruisers on the ship varied widely. For the upcoming cruise, when calculating the amount you intend to spend, please factor in the number of $6-$10 drinks you are planning to buy for me. That should help to avoid any confusion.
- There will be more people at the SoCal party on Sept. 1 than at the WA state party. But remember, it’s quality that matters, not quantity.
- The many S&D virgins that plan to attend the upcoming cruise should not be deterred from their anticipation by the many MILFs that wish to haze them.
- Those of you who are organized will be happy to know that JetBlue now has a schedule for January and February. Those of you who are like me still haven’t decided which airport to fly from (though in my defense, I appear to have 4-5 to choose from at the moment).
- Despite the fears of weather forecasters, residents (who understandably didn’t want to lose everything/drown), and anticipation-happy cruisers, the destruction expected to result from Hurricane Dean was not as bad as suspected. So our cruise will not be ruined! Yay! Also, the livelihoods and lives of millions of people are OK too.
- Possibly in response to the level of complaining reached by certain members of this board, Lauren very kindly posted audio files of the various phone calls. Thank you for that, Lauren. But I’m still going to moan and whine.
- Host hotel info is on its way! Which will be great, because then I can book a room and feel like I am organized at least in this small, small way.
- There is some concern that canopy/zip line excursions won’t be as good after the recent hurricane damages. Just as long as it doesn’t affect the dolphin swimming…
- It would appear that the Miami marathon is happening right around the time we all will be getting on the ship. Some people are considering trying to join them. Others are concerned that they may fill up a lot of hotel rooms, making the night before a little more difficult for us. I just plan to toast them from the Lido Deck with one of those pretty tropical cocktails.

- Gaelic Storm in the rain in Milwaukee sounds like way more fun than most other bands in the rain.

- Thanks to my sister, who was at the London BNL show, I now know what was going on in the picture currently being used by J9x as an avatar. And yes, it was amusing.
- Flight of the Conchords has reappeared as a suggestion for a new band on the cruise. That would make me happy. The mention of someone named Cas Haley, who was apparently on one of those reality show things I try to ignore, incited some debate.
- Guster is playing in Providence on 9/7 and Boston on 9/8. These shows are cheap. Cheap is good. Especially for those of us likely to spend 5 times as much as the ticket price just on getting to the concert…
- The “Barenaked Ladies Are Them” video is amusing. As are the other 67 videos provided by bnlmusic on YouTube. I waste a lot of time on YouTube.
- Although Guster apparently pretends that the album “Parachutes” doesn’t exist (**why is that?), there are a lot of good songs on it anyway.
- Buck 65 and the LeeVees were suggested for the cruise. I’m guessing we have a better chance of getting the LeeVees…
- If you are influenced by the music choices of others, check out the many Top Ten Guster songs to decide what you like.
- Many people like Cake. I like Cake too, especially if it’s chocolate.
- We are saddened to note that we will not be graced by the Thundergod on the cruise, although the sadness is lessened somewhat by the excellent use of “thunder-” in multiple posts. And by the pinch-drumming of Tyler and Andy as well, of course.

So, for the first time since roughly June, I’m not hot and crabby while I write this. Seattle weather is ever so much better than New York weather. Why do I live there again? Anyway…
This marks my first attempt to review the week’s postings from my parents’ house. We’ll see if I get through the whole thing before my mother comes home and wants to hang out. Or check her e-mail. I kind of miss having my own computer…
Enough! There’s way too much of this posting stuff from this week. And so, as always, the Review begins with Victory (does anybody else ever wonder why this forum is named after the whole ship, while the others are only named after small sections? Probably not.):
- Goof, dastumer, and dastumer’s wife are cruisers-to-be in their 40s. I love it that this board doesn’t make me feel old (unlike my real life, in which I am stuck hanging out with 20 year old undergrads on a regular basis).
- GreenSaints will be wearing a British flag on the cruise. Did you know that it’s technically illegal to make clothes out of American flags?
- Gaelic Storm and baseball both happened in the Great Lakes region.
- If you would like to know where Michelle in WI has lived over the past decade or so, that information is available among the cabin info.
- People would like Oakhurst back on the next cruise. Did they really play on the elevators? How did I miss that?
- There WILL be a WA state/Oregon/BC/anyone else close enough gathering on Sept. 1. Or else…
- Some people got a second call from BNL this week. I don’t like these people anymore.
- People in SoCal are overachievers who are probably way less fun to hang out with on Sept. 1 than the cool people in WA state. Please plan your travel accordingly.
- There’s a form you need to fill out if you need to change a guest’s name in the reservation.
- Some of the newbies got their phone calls from the band. Some of them didn’t – welcome to the rejection club! Fortunately, pauprint is offering psychiatric counseling at a very reasonable rate.
- Those of us with no calls definitely deserve a make-up party on the cruise. Sixthman – please get on this. Thank you.
- There’s a $4 train ride that can take you from the Ft. Lauderdale airport to that of Miami, should your travel plans take you to the slightly farther airport.
- More information about how to get cheap hotels off the internet was provided. It’s still way too far away for me to want to think about such things. Eventually though…
- The S&D virgins can take consolation in the thought that us more experienced, worldly cruisers will go easy on you come January. Maybe…
- I would like a BNL Euro sticker for my non-existent car. However, I am far too lazy to pursue such an item on my own. Someone else should take care of this for me. Thanks!

- In which americk is looking for someone to help fill a quad, unfinished has come out as the final roommate of the most-talkative roommate finders in history (Jackie Lynn, countabby, et al.), rainstar would like a few more people to share costs, and shorty83 just wants a bed somewhere. I would write more about these people individually, but, due to the aforementioned laziness, I won’t. Unless one of them uses me as a referral. In which case, I will happily write a full paragraph praising their greatness to this board. And I’ll buy them drinks.
But until that time, we must move on to the Caribbean Lounge and all its attending band-love:
- There were a few more shared first times with BNL. Which reminded me, yet again, how much of a loser I was to not get around to seeing them in concert until October of last year.
- Jim is very nice, as evidenced by the stories shared. Jim is also very tall, as evidenced by the picture posted by jengreg6.
- Somehow, it would appear from the photographic evidence that Ed sat next to many different people simultaneously on the cruise. That’s kind of cool.
- Tyler’s pretty darn cool.
- Concert banter is funny. Why aren’t they doing any concerts (concerts that I can get tickets for anyway) these days? They should tour all the time. That’d be neat.
- Not only does Steve sing well, but he also inspires drool in multiple outfits (some of them imaginary).
- Chris Farley was funny and more people have been to many concerts. Only in the crazy, weird world of the message board would these two statements be related.
- Funny things happen at BNL concerts. So sad that we have to wait until January to partake of new funny things.
- Gaelic Storm will be playing in New York City on Sept. 13. Finally I get to see them!
- The Handsome Family and Debra Digiovanni have been added for our cruise enjoyment. We will hopefully figure out who The Handsome Family are before January. But I’m sure they’re very good.

- Ed’s jell-o commercials amuse me. Not that that’s difficult.
- Weeds and Californication are two shows that I would definitely be watching. If only I could afford another premium cable channel. But since I can’t technically afford one, I shall have to wait until the DVDs eventually, someday (probably in about a year) appear.

- WeedMage finished her online game. I have found that I lack the patience for any game that requires dedication and/or more brainpower than solitaire.

I was going to write this for Friday evening as a lovely, not-so-surprising treat to all those who haunt the boards. Alas, in much the same manner that many of us failed to receive an alumni S&D call this week, disappointment reared its ugly head. The blame lies, not with me, but with my mother, William Shakespeare, and my roommate. My mother for calling at 11:30 and proceeding to chat for the next 1.5 hours. William Shakespeare for writing a 3 hour play (who knew A Midsummer Night’s Dream was so long?). And my roommate just because, well, it’s probably her fault. Everything is, right?
Now to the review. Which will be long. Longer than usual, I mean. Possibly due to a certain phone call…
The Victory:
- Sting rays and waterfall hikes are probably OK and perfectly safe as excursions when one is on a cruise. Both still kind of freak me out.
- Priceline is a verb, much like Google and e-mail. If you’re way more organized than me and want to plan your Miami hotel already, you should Priceline. Or maybe http://www.biddingfortravel.com/, but I don’t think that’s a verb yet, so be careful.
- More discussion of Guitar Hero and related games was had. Does somebody want to buy me a video game system so I can find out why everyone gets so excited about this? That would be cool.
- Flight prices from the UK are fairly high but exhibit an impressive range.
- There were more cruise suggestions about what to bring. It’s also a good idea to bring/get contact info. Although I don’t know why they’re not just on the message board with the rest of us. This seems to imply that there is life outside of this place, an implication that I, for one, choose to ignore as much as possible.
- Most people have received their Paste by now, although often without the CD. Not much can be done about that, but if your copy came without the Sixthman newsletter, that can be seen at http://www.sixthman.net/.
- There were questions about when one should book a flight in order to get the best price. This is the eternal travel question. If someone figures it out, please let me know.
- Those nutty SoCal people have planned their gathering menu, even though they still have three weeks of planning remaining to them. Will they be able to keep up the planning momentum? Will there be discussion on a daily basis until Labor Day weekend? Probably. They’re weird that way.
- BNL (or a recorded facsimile thereof) tried to guilt some alumni into booking for the cruise. Such people should feel guilty.
- There was much advice on the perfect dinner time and whether one should stand or sit at the concert. Whatever your feeling on the matter, feel secure in the knowledge that we can all come together in our love for the chocolate melting cake.
- new_odyssey will be almost 31 on the cruise, while jengreg6 will be 26. And hopefully neither will mind that I just wrote that here.
- People are booking and planning flights to either Ft. Lauderdale or Miami. If the weather in New York keeps up like it did last week, it will be hard to find a flight from here.
- If anyone has any brilliant ideas about how to smuggle hamnack’s pregnant wife onto the cruise ship, please don’t hold back.
- On Wednesday, all of us lucky alumni were surprised and excited by the beautifully recorded voices of BNL thanking us profusely for our continued support. They even hinted showing this thanks with backrubs! Of course, some of us didn’t get this call. Even though we’re alumni. Who never did anything wrong, like flashing the band or having abnormally long legs. Life’s just not fair.
- jengreg6 and others are happy to be currently worth USD 0.95. If BNL calls the newbies, will that increase or decrease their value?
- If you’ve decided that you hate your roommates, you can try to win another cabin from Rock Ridge Music. Unless you’re in the UK. And Canada can be very cold in the winter.
- WeedMage, who is not Fin, answered the question about cameras at concerts. Although you can make your own BNL Euro sticker, I’m too lazy and would like the band to provide such things.

- John from Cincinnati ends its season on Sunday. I am absolutely certain that all mysteries will be resolved in one more hour. Especially since it only took an hour or two at the beginning of the season to establish said mysteries. The rest of the season was apparently just filler.
- If you ever felt the need to know some ridiculously long song titles, check out the count up and down game.
- Many TV shows, especially on cable, have shorter seasons these days. Lazy, moneygrubbing TV executives and my roommate are probably behind this.
- WeedMage’s new fish, Lukey (not Etienne) appears to live in an upside-down bowl.

- 2kids5cats joined the increasingly less-rarified air surrounding those of us with more than 3000 posts.

The Return of Friday (8/3/07)
So I’m not sure if anyone who doesn’t re-read all the week’s posts has noticed this, but the past couple of weeks have actually been pretty slow on this board. This is kind of a pain when a person is bored and wants to be entertained by all you loonies, but it’s great for the person who has to spend copious amounts of time writing Weeks in Review. And I’ve been busy the past couple of weekends, so the shorter writing time was good.
This week, not so much. The board is back, and with a vengeance. The Review is also back (on Friday), and with a vengeance. Or something like that.
Even the Victory was busy with all sorts of important news:
- The wristbands have probably been ordered. Hope you all put your order in!
- bludden did karaoke and is brave enough to show us. Jackie is planning to provide back-up dancing for the Whitney Houston karaoke on the upcoming cruise. She is also brave.
- Thanks to Sixthman, we received free copies of Paste (not Pasta) Magazine, which also offered a good subscription deal to those of us in the US and a free CD to those of us with mailpeople who don’t steal our CDs.
- More Brits are coming. Maybe they’re planning to take over the ship…
- The SoCal gathering is, as usual, ridiculously over-organized, despite the fact it’s not happening for several weeks. They need to be more like the NW folk, who have decided on a time and place and apparently need no more organization than that. And Rena has a boyfriend!
- Miami hotels are officially scary. Hopefully Sixthman will protect us from the demolitions and crack dealers by finding a host hotel.
- You can now find any information you would ever need to know about cruising, thanks to NikkiPoooo, Amicus, NiceyDoodle, michelesobo, and Suebee42. You can also be reminded of the beauty that is the chocolate melting cake, thanks to me.

- The Ben Folds cruise was canceled, either due to low sales or to scheduling conflicts. Doesn’t he understand that cruises should take precedence over all else when scheduling?
- Some people are really into Jesus Christ Superstar.
- Hairspray brought back up that old, beloved debate about whether it’s better to see a movie at home or in the theater.
- Tom Snyder died. My parents wouldn’t let me stay up that late when his show was on.
- Crazy cats, cats with “presents,” cats on fire, cats on anti-depressants… And people wonder why I’m not a cat person…
- Capri pants are not cool for men. But neither are most other leg garments, so just give up and be dorks.
- More people finished Harry Potter. Does that mean I can spoil the ending yet?
- John from Cincinnati is still confusing, still frustrating, still underutilizing Luis Guzman, and still watched.
- It’s creepy the way famous people often do die in bunches.
- There will be a Renaissance Fair in Gig Harbor, WA on August 18. Hopefully the Mud Show and the Pickle Boy will be there too, because I am now quite intrigued.

- bludden did karaoke and is brave enough to show us. Jackie is planning to provide back-up dancing for the Whitney Houston karaoke on the upcoming cruise. She is also brave.
- Thanks to Sixthman, we received free copies of Paste (not Pasta) Magazine, which also offered a good subscription deal to those of us in the US and a free CD to those of us with mailpeople who don’t steal our CDs.
- More Brits are coming. Maybe they’re planning to take over the ship…
- The SoCal gathering is, as usual, ridiculously over-organized, despite the fact it’s not happening for several weeks. They need to be more like the NW folk, who have decided on a time and place and apparently need no more organization than that. And Rena has a boyfriend!
- Miami hotels are officially scary. Hopefully Sixthman will protect us from the demolitions and crack dealers by finding a host hotel.
- You can now find any information you would ever need to know about cruising, thanks to NikkiPoooo, Amicus, NiceyDoodle, michelesobo, and Suebee42. You can also be reminded of the beauty that is the chocolate melting cake, thanks to me.
